Forbidden Planet (1956)

Amazing!

Forbidden Planet tagline

Far and away the most provocative and unusual film you've ever seen ... Two years in the making in Cinemascope

from the trailer

This is probably the most well-known of all the fifties scifi films, which include classics such as The Day the Earth Stood Still and This Island Earth. Equally well-known is the source of the plot: William Shakespeare's last play The Tempest, given a very Freudian slant. The film was directed by Fred M. Wilcox (Lassie Come Home, 1943) and the script written by Cyril Hume from the original by Irving Block and Alan J. Adler. The latter turned down the offer of "Z-movie" specialists Allied Artists to make the film, and instead convinced MGM's Dore Schary to finance it. Warren plays Lt. "Doc" Ostrow.

Note: I bought my copy of the video at BlackStar.co.uk. It is the Special Collector's Edition, in widescreen format, and came with three black and white cards with promo shots and info on the reverse of each. It has since been deleted.
